Figure Skate Maintenance Guide

Proper maintenance of figure skates is important for both performance and safety. Well-maintained skates last longer, feel more stable on the ice, and are easier to control.

🔧 1. Sharpening
Blades become dull with use → you will notice reduced grip while skating.

Sharpening interval: typically every 15–30 sessions, depending on ice conditions and skating style.

You need sharpening if:

  • turns or skating feel slippery
  • stops don’t grip
  • you tire more quickly than usual

Always have sharpening done by a professional familiar with figure skates and their specific requirements (different from hockey skates!).

🧼 2. Drying After Use
Dry the blades immediately after practice with a towel.
Also remove moisture from the boots—loosen the laces and let them air dry.

This prevents rust and odor.

🛡️ 3. Blade Guards

  • Hard guards: use when walking off-ice (protect blades)
  • Soft guards (soakers): for storage → absorb moisture

Do not store skates in hard guards for long periods.

🧴 4. Rust Prevention
Store skates in a dry place.
Keep blades in fabric blade covers.

👢 5. Boot Maintenance
Check regularly:

  • laces (replace worn ones)
  • soles and heels (no cracks)
  • tighten screws regularly

Leather boots can be treated with conditioner.

⏱️ 6. When to Service?
Take your skates for maintenance if:

  • the blade is clearly misaligned or damaged
  • the blade feels dull
  • rust cannot be removed
  • the boot structure is failing

💡 Tip: If you train actively, always carry a screwdriver and spare laces.

Our figure skate maintenance service is among the best in the industry. We have been servicing figure skates with professional expertise since 2005.

Over the years, in collaboration with blade manufacturers John Wilson and Mitchel & King, we have developed a figure skate maintenance guide for retailers worldwide. Pia Hartman has had the pleasure and honor of being the initiator of this work, as well as an expert and collaborator.
